Earth has fallen ... and humanity is holding its breath, waiting for the next blow to fall.

On Terra Nova, Earth’s oldest colony world, chaos and anarchy are threatening to break out, with total collapse only one disaster away. In a desperate attempt to save the rest of the Empire, the planet’s Governor has summoned the leaders of the Core Worlds to Terra Nova, in hopes of sharing power and preventing civil war. But dark forces are on the move, intent on ensuring that the conference fails.

As the first strands of a deadly plot are uncovered, Imperial Marshal Glen Cheal finds himself fighting to uncover the plot before it is too late. Meanwhile, on her own mission to save the last best hope for peace, Specialist Belinda Lawson of the Terran Marine Corps is plunged into a nightmare where she can no longer trust her own mind, while her decisions will save or damn the Empire ...

Failure isn't an option. But success may not be an option either ...

This is the 9th of the Empire's Corps Books and it isn't my favorite.

I love this series but Mr. Nuttall has been hopping around a lot lately. Not sticking with the excellent characters and story lines he started with. It's confusing to readers and the tone of the books changes.

It isn't a bad book. Not at all. It just doesn't fit in this series which could be said by a few others of the nine. If Mr. Nuttall re-packaged this series and had say three series in the Empire's Corp Universe that would better set the expectations for readers.

Other than that. Good book continuing from "When the Bough Breaks". Not the kind of action I prefer in the "main" story line of the series though.

While not a mainline story about Stalker's Stalkers, Avalon and the Commonwealth, this book brings the Marine Pathfinder Belinda Lawson back for more action, after her near-death experience protecting the Childe Emperor Roland. I found her to be a very interesting character, and I loved the internal conversations she would have with the voices in her head. Her mental instability, caused by the electrical stun net she was trapped in as she tried to escape the Undercity on Earth with Roland, overloading several of her neural linked implants, adds a nice depth to her persona (by the way... if you noticed where, exactly, she pulled the monofilament knife out of in order to escape from the net, points for you). The conversations with her deceased comrades, and the observations they made, were both amusing and intriguing, and her survivor's guilt plays a strong role in her instability. Her interactions and relationship with Imperial Marshal Glen Cheal felt natural, like the 2 characters just meshed together as their storylines converged. I hope to see these 2 back for more in the future!
Good Science Fiction has, to me, always taken a current trend or two in society and then used the genre to explore how that might play out in a future universe. The future might be only a few years away of course. My favourite has always been the far distant future though, with a military twist. This book satisfies those points.

Belinda is a super soldier by virtue of both her training and the electronic and other enhancements made to her body. We saw her first in Book 3 of the Series, 'When the Bough Breaks,' where she was cold at the beginning but became humanised during that novel. Here we see her dealing with the aftermath of failure in Book 3 - at least failure from the cold, black and white reasoning of her rarefied level of soldiering. She is very human in this story. There is a second major storyline weaving through this book, related to the other main character - a policeman. The stories weave together well, developing a pace and complexity that is highly addictive. For readers of earlier books in the series, this one also starts to answer that nagging question hinted at in Book 3, of what happened to the Slaughterhouse at the end.

Chris Nuttall has struck a rich storytelling vein with this series. There are multiple potential sequels that can be written for either the mainline of this story or the various sublines developed in the odd numbered books in the series. I suspect he can keep writing good stories in this 'universe' for some time yet. This is good stuff.
The story line of this book took me somewhat by surprise. I was expecting a merger of the disappearance of the young Emperor and the Marines at the destruction of life on Earth, and the stranded Marines of Colonel Stalker. Instead we were introduced to the turmoil that occurred in the Core Worlds after the demise of Imperial Earth. Forces are at work to make sure that the Terran Empire dies with Earth, and the Marines and the Imperial Marshall's are working to prevent this. This is more a tale of political intrigue and espionage than Marines in battle, but that doesn't detract from the story. It is well written and kept my interest to the end. Hopefully the merger of the story lines will occur soon. Hurry Chris.
I wasn’t sure I’d be all that thrilled to read a book about a detective and his problems. I’m a science fiction fan and I didn’t see how this could evolve into any kind of military/space adventure story. But I started reading it and was soon so engrossed by the story line that I couldn’t put this book down.

It did help that we get to read about Specialist Belinda Lawson, the Pathfinder Marine, who barely escaped the fall of Earth with the young Emperor. She proved to be very talented in “When the Bough Breaks (Empire’s Corps #3) by knocking some sense into a very wild and uncouth young man while saving his backside until they could be picked up by the Marines who were also fleeing Earth as it destroyed itself.

Now with a new assignment, she’s to make sure a Conference gets held in a floating space habitat, Island One, above Terra Nova. As usual, she’s quietly inserted on to the planet and must find a way to accomplish her mission.

At the same time, we start reading about Imperial Marshal (Deputy Inspector) Glen Cheal. He’s kicking off a raid on a suspected terrorist warehouse stash of stolen goods. What he also kicks off is the beginning of a string of occurrences that bring him and Lawson together to work security for the Conference. Their only problem is they don’t know who or what could effect the Conference. And while it’s going on, the planet below them may be coming apart a the seams.

I really did enjoy this book once it got going. And no, it wasn’t just about some detective solving a mystery. There’s a lot of action through out the book and plenty of combat even if there’s only one Marine around!
